How to Stay Warm (or Cool) Without Power

Most folks don’t realize how fast a home can get cold in winter or sweltering in summer when the power goes out. Whether it’s a snowstorm knocking down lines or a summer heatwave straining the grid, losing power can turn uncomfortable—or even dangerous—if you’re not prepared.

Here’s how to manage your home’s temperature during a blackout without fancy gear.

1️⃣ Staying Warm During Winter Blackouts

Layer Up: Wear multiple layers, including hats and socks, even indoors. Layers trap heat better than one thick piece of clothing.

Close Off Rooms: Pick one room to keep warm and block off unused spaces by closing doors and hanging blankets over doorways.

Insulate Windows: Use blankets, towels, or even bubble wrap to reduce drafts around windows and doors.

Use Safe Heat Sources: If you have a safe, indoor-rated propane heater or wood stove, it can be a lifesaver. Never use outdoor grills or camp stoves indoors.

Sleep Smart: Share blankets and body heat if you’re with family. Sleeping bags are great for holding in warmth overnight.

2️⃣ Staying Cool During Summer Blackouts

Close Curtains: Block sunlight during the day to keep rooms cooler.

Ventilate at Night: If it’s cooler outside, open windows at night to let in air, then close them in the morning.

Stay Hydrated: Drink water regularly to avoid overheating.

Use Damp Cloths: Wipe down with a wet cloth or place a damp towel on your neck to cool off.

Rest During Peak Heat: Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day to prevent heat exhaustion.

3️⃣ Why Temperature Prepping Matters

Extreme temperatures are one of the biggest dangers during a blackout. Having a plan in place—and a few simple supplies—can help keep you and your family safe, whether it’s a freezing winter storm or a scorching summer outage.
